Ginseng and Immunity: How Panax Ginseng Boosts Immunity

The body’s capacity to heal is reduced when immunological function declines. Korean red ginseng, commonly known as Asian ginseng has been studied to substantiate the claims of ginseng and immunity.

Ginseng was acknowledged by the South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for its antioxidant characteristics and benefits in boosting immunity. 

Both in vitro and in vivo research have been done on how Korean Red Ginseng affects the immune system. 

Korean Red Ginseng is said to have positive benefits in human clinical research on immune cell count and cytokines.

These claims were proven in persons with different health issues such as acute respiratory disorders, fatigue, blood circulation, and focus.

Scientific Evidence

The scientists investigated the effects of two months of Korean Red Ginseng use on the immune cells of healthy volunteers.

All the volunteers had recently experienced an upper respiratory infection in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. 

The study was carried out in South Korea. 

Healthy males and females between the ages of 40 and 65 with white blood cell counts “below 6.0 10/mL” were eligible to participate.

The participants’ demographic data, medical history, and medication usage were documented during the initial visit. 50 individuals were split equally between the Korean Red Ginseng group and the placebo group.

they were all required to take two tablets twice a day for eight weeks. 

The body’s immune system cells T cells, B cells, and WBCs were the primary outcome measures eight weeks into the intervention. Changes in cytokines as well as the frequency of upper respiratory infections were considered secondary measures. 

Conclusions

After eight weeks of therapy, there were noticeably more T cells in the Korean Red Ginseng group than in the placebo group. 

The Korean Red Ginseng group significantly outperformed the placebo group in terms of the changes in T cell counts from the beginning of the trial to the end. 

During the trial, the helper T cell and cytotoxic T cell subtypes dramatically increased in the Korean Red Ginseng group compared to the placebo group. 

Additionally, after eight weeks, the KRG group’s rise in the dispersion of B cells was noticeably higher than that of the placebo group. 

In comparison to the placebo group, White Blood Cells considerably increased in the Korean Red Ginseng group.
The study’s safety review found that Korean Red Ginseng is safe and that it “boosts the immune system through an increase in T cells, B cells, and White Blood Cells.
